Somewhere along the way, many of us started thinking coloring was something we were supposed to grow out of.
I disagree.

1. Coloring Gives Your Brain Something Simple to Focus On
Adult life comes with a lot of noise.
Bills. Work. Family. Notifications. Appointments. Emails. Laundry. That one thing you were supposed to remember but can't quite remember what it was.
Then you sit down with a coloring page and suddenly your biggest decision is:

There's something wonderful about that.
Coloring gives you one simple thing to focus on at a time. Instead of thinking about ten different things, you're choosing a color and filling a space.
You don't have to accomplish anything.

This might be my favorite thing about coloring.
You don't need to know how to draw.
You don't need fancy supplies.
You don't need an art degree.
And you definitely don't need anybody's permission.
The picture is already there waiting for you.
All you have to do is make it yours.
Want a pink pumpkin?
Color it pink.
Want a purple puppy?
Make that puppy purple.
Want every single thing on the page to be your favorite shade of blue?
Go for it.
There are no coloring police coming to your house.
Promise.
3. It's a Break From the Screen
So much of our day happens on a screen.
We work on screens, shop on screens, watch TV on screens, check social media on screens, answer messages on screens — and sometimes even our "relaxing" time is spent scrolling.
Printing a coloring page and sitting down with actual coloring supplies gives you a chance to do something with your hands instead.
Put your phone down.
Turn on some music.
Grab your favorite drink.
And color for a while.
It doesn't have to become some elaborate self-care routine.
Ten or fifteen quiet minutes counts.
4. Coloring Can Help You Slow Down
One of the reasons people find coloring relaxing is that it requires just enough attention to pull your focus toward what's happening right in front of you.
What color comes next?
Where does this line end?
Should these two colors match?
For a little while, your attention gets to live on the page instead of everywhere else.
And sometimes that's exactly what we need.
Not another task.
Not another goal.
Just something enjoyable to do.
5. It Lets You Be Creative Without Starting From Scratch
Have you ever looked at a completely blank piece of paper and thought:
Okay...now what?
Me too.
That's part of what makes coloring so approachable.
The drawing has already been started for you, but there are still hundreds of little decisions that belong entirely to you.
You choose the colors.
You choose the supplies.
You decide whether everything matches.
You decide whether you're coloring carefully inside every line or happily ignoring half of them.
Two people can color the exact same page and end up with completely different pictures.
That's creativity.
6. Cute Things Aren't Just for Kids Either
I need to say this one for the grown-ups in the back.
You are allowed to like cute things.
Cupcakes with faces.
Cozy bedrooms.
Adorable animals.
Big bows.
Candy shops.
Cookies.
Tiny bakeries.
Sweet characters.
All of it.
Growing older doesn't mean we have to stop enjoying things that make us smile.

Start with something that makes you smile.
That's really it.
Don't worry about whether a page is "adult enough." Don't start with the most complicated design you can find because you think adult coloring is supposed to be difficult.
Choose something you actually want to color.
Maybe that's a cozy room filled with cute details.
Maybe it's an adorable animal.
Maybe it's food with little smiling faces.
Maybe it's a simple page with big, open spaces because you find those much more relaxing than tiny intricate patterns.
Your coloring time belongs to you.

Grab whatever supplies you already have.
Put your phone somewhere you won't automatically reach for it.
Then color.
Don't worry about whether the colors match.
Don't worry about whether you stay inside the lines.
And please don't worry about whether you're "too old" for it.
Just see how you feel afterward.
